St. Martin's Monastery Concert
On Friday, Oct. 5, the Rapid City NPM (National Association of Pastoral Musicians) chapter presented a concert at St. Martin’s Monastery. Included on the program were choirs from St. Therese’s, Cathedral of OLPH youth and children’s choirs, and Blessed Sacrament funeral choir. The Benedictine sisters sang a selection while the Spiess family plus Maria Munoz led the audience in song. Bishop Blase Cupich commissioned all music ministers present.
Bishop Blase Cupich shared with the music ministers the importance of their talents and the impact that music ministry can make at liturgy. He shared information about upcoming documents that the bishops are considering and the advantages that they will have for music ministers. Service awards for years in music ministry were presented. They are (see below).The banquet was coordinated by Lynn Moran from Custer. Jackie Schnittgrund, NPM Director, presented the Jim and Jackie Schnittgrund Scholarship to Bonnie Beer on behalf of her grandson, Steven Spiess. Honored for her contribution to NPM was Sue Englin as she received the 2007 Peggy Langenfeld NPM Memorial Award. Mary Ann Rasmussen received the 2007 NPM St. Cecilia Award for Laity and Rev. William Zandri the St. Cecilia Award for Clergy.
St. Therese’s is sponsoring a spiritual retreat conducted by Fr. Jim Marchionda in Nov. 10-14 He is a renown music minister with exceptional spirituality.
Rehearsals for Our Lady of Guadalupe are Dec 1 & 8 from 1-3 pm at Blessed Sacrament. The Mass will be on December 12 starting at 6PM.
On January 26 in Sturgis, NPM presents Christmas in January. Two area choirs will sing several songs they used at Christmas. Those who attended the national NPM convention in Indianapolis will share their thoughts. Upcoming 2008 conventions are as follows: East Brunswick, NJ (June30-July 3), Cleveland, OH (July 8-11), Los Angeles, CA (Aug. 5-8). Free music will be distributed along with CDs from WLP. A presentation for cantor certification will be heard as well as information regarding upcoming testing dates.
April 5 brings NPM to Martin. This workshop will discuss our role in the RCIA program and its rites. Teaching new music to the congregation will be demonstrated as well as Basic Resources for Small Parishes. Fr. Bryan Sorenson will discuss The Presider’s View of Music in Liturgy.
A highlight for the NPM year will be the gathering of children from throughout the diocese at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral, June 14, 2008 for a Children’s Choir Festival with Janet Vogt and Mark Friedman. Each parish is asked to send at least one child. The day begins early and culminates in a concert at 7:00pm. Free housing will be available at St. Martin’s.
